![]() ![]() You can, of course, add more layers of compression to your drums after Smash and Grab. We’d argue that there is no other plugin on the market that lets you do this whilst sounding this good! This is down to the streamlined nature of the plugin and the fantastic user interface, making drum compression easier than ever. However you use this control, it is ideal for helping your drums cut through a busy mix by drawing out the harmonic content.Īs you’ll see in Charlie’s tutorial, he’s able to do all his drum compression in just over five minutes. A light Saturation will add soft clipping, or you can turn it all the way up to add a layer of distortion which can be great when used in parallel. With the Saturation control, you can add an extra layer of detail to your drum sound. If it’s set to kick, the Beef control will likely boost some lower frequencies compared the if the Drum Knob were set to snare. The frequency being boosted will change depending on whatever the Drum Knob is set to. This can be great for brightening up a snare or your overheads. The Air control, on the other hand, adds some shine to your signal. The Beef control will add a little more low end to your signal, giving it some extra weight once it’s been compressed. To help shape your drum sound even more, this plugin also includes a pre-compression EQ in the form of the Beef and Air controls. What other features does Smash and Grab have? Move the dial until you’re hearing the right amount of compression, whatever that may be. Once you have decided which side to use for a specific application, you just need to adjust the threshold accordingly for your track. You might find that you prefer the Smash side on your drum shells once you’ve fiddled with the controls! Of course, in the 2.0 version of the plugin, you can adjust the fast attack and release times and experiment with the results you get. ![]() The grab module is perfect for giving drums attack and impact whilst shaping the overall tone. The tail end of our shells however gets compressed, creating a larger-than-life sound that is synonymous with modern snare and tom sounds. On the other hand, the Grab side is modelled on VCA style compressors. This just gives you further control over your snare sound. Whilst the snare drum can poke through a bit too much on a lot of overhead sounds, using the Smash side of the plugin is perfect for squashing it back down due to its fast attack. This plugin is split into two modules that can be switched between. This gives experienced users a little more flexibility. This gives you the option to alter more parameters, such as the attack, ratio and release. ![]() In the new 2.0 version of the plugin, you can expand the UI. You can of course adjust the threshold to account for your specific drum tracks. This will apply the finely tuned compression settings in an instant, and just like that, your kick sounds incredible. You can simply load up the compressor on your kick track, for example, and select the kick mode on the UI. This is because GGD have crafted the perfect settings for each drum shell. The controls you’d expect to see on a compressor such as attack, ratio and release are not visible when you open up the plugin.
